Lake Area

Do you often meet a doctor who will cure your teeth, examine your heart, make you fingernails look fine and then help you with your childhood psychological trauma again, if you get to know that a person is a photographer, do you expect him to be good at everything? Landscapes, fashion, pets and microphotography of cute bacteria in knitted hats?

That’s the problem with designers, photographers and IT specialists. Some people don’t understand that they might have different specializations.

Here’s a little list of photography niches, showing how different we all are, even though we all hold a photo camera on our Facebook avatars. Of course we don’t. Just kidding. Or do you? Come on, it’s bad taste.

Capture Behavior

I like to photograph portraits as much as the next person, but to really get a sense of your subject, try to capture behavior shots that tell more about its personality and life. Behavior encompasses basically everything your subject does, from eating to sleeping, courting, mating, raising its young, and so on. The more you know your subject and its behavior, the greater the chances of success at capturing a decisive moment.

Quirky wedding photography

Traditional flowers, romance and pastel-pink color palettes might leave you cold. If you’re more of a fun-loving, totally individual type, there are plenty of laid-back and quirky photographers who specialise in capturing free-spirited, out-of-the-ordinary wedding parties that don’t take themselves too seriously. This type of photographer can be a great way of busting wedding nerves and helping everyone to relax, especially if lots of your wedding guests don’t already know each other. Some quirky photographers can photoshop you flying through the air, bring along props to hold, think up games to play (the groomsmen carrying the bridesmaids in a piggyback race is a favourite) or devise whole photo stories like this epic zombie-themed wedding shoot.

Fine art wedding photography

What’s often called “fine art style” wedding photography is usually quite traditional and classic, but with added filmic touches and influences from fashion editorial shoots in magazines. Wedding photographers who shoot in this style often have a background in fashion or portrait photography, and specialise in making your wedding snaps look romantic, dreamlike and, above all, beautiful.

Epic Wedding Photography

Okay, so I might have made this term up. But I definitely didn’t invent the style. Epic wedding photography is exactly what it sounds like. Epic. Wedding. Photographs. The hallmarks of this style are usually dramatic backdrops with impeccable lighting, and images that have a level of intensity not usually seen in other wedding photography styles. Epic wedding photography is just as much about the location as it is the couple, so epic wedding photographers are usually well skilled in lighting techniques that make the most out of these locations. The end product is dramatic and editorial.
